Media Pitch for AS film

Here is our pitch, we received some useful feedback, especially regarding a title for our film. We were suggested to go with something people can remember and something that is relevant to the style of the film.

Tuesday 11 November 2014

This outfit test was great as we got a real perspective of how the outfits will look in low lighting levels. We are satisfied with what they look like, as it gives them a hint of a mysterious look.

Costumes For Film Opening

The first costume that Jamie and Jared will wear in our 2 Minute film opening will be the classic black suit and tie. They choose to wear this as it is a typically known look for business men or for characters that are up to no good. In our film as the two characters are not business men, the fact that when they wear this is will give off a comical look rather than the, sleek business man one they were going for.

The second costume the two characters will be wearing, will be a white dishdash complimented with a patterned shemagh headscarf. The reason for this outfit is purely because it is so out of the blue and random we hope for it to give off an immature and comic look. They also choose this attire as they find it a good way to hide their identity as they rob a corner shop.

Insidious Chapter 2 - Opening Scene Analysis

Insidious: Chapter 2
Genre: Horror/Thriller

Characters

In the beginning the characters speak very slowly with short sharp sentences, which build up the tension with the awkward silence in the background. The male character has a very peculiar, its just his long hair and beard join as one and his long brown tweed coat all look very mysterious, this all goes very well together to present itself as a horror film.

Sound
It starts off with very eerie and spooky music which is non diegetic. This music then fades off and moves onto a silence in which all you can hear is the foot steps of one of the characters. Which turns it into diegetic sound.

Camera Shots
The first camera shot we see is a low shot showing the footsteps of the first character. Then after she walks up the steps leading to the house we are shown a low to high angle shot, which looks like a bit of an establishing shot, as we can see the character, the house and all of its surroundings. We're then presented with an over the shoulder shot which was used to show conversation between two characters.

Mise en Scene
The mise en scene of this film is a dark mysterious looking house with wind whistling, this really is a good recipe for a horror film. As the camera moves into the house, we can see the décor of the house is very old fashioned and dated, this is a stereotypical characteristic of a a spooky haunted house and i think this works really well, especially as the genre is horror/ thriller.

We are not shown a great deal of footage in the opening 2 minutes, but by the camera angles showing the audience the mysterious house and peculiar clothing of certain characters, the audience can most definitely tell the film is along the horror genre.

Project X - Opening Scene Analysis

Project X
Genre: Crime/Comedy

Camera Shots
The first initial camera shot we see is a mid shot of one of the main characters, Costa. But the film starts off looking as though it is self filmed by one of his friends, trying to give it that home made film look and feel. This friend of theirs then follows Costa into the house with an over the shoulder shot.

Characters
We're first introduced to Costa who comes over as a very confident character, but also looks as though he's only got this cocky and confident act in his comfort zone with his friends. He is the one who is all out in throwing a massive party at his friends house known as 'Project X'. We are then introduced to Thomas's mother who overheard Costa talking about the party, which made her slightly suspicious. I also get the feeling that she believes anything Thomas or his friends say to a certain extent, so she has a sense of being gullible to her to.

Mise en Scene
The mise en scene is pretty much Thomas's house throughout the whole film, not just the opening scene. Although the first shots start outside in his front garden, then it does move through to his kitchen where Thomas's mum confronts him (Costa thought that Thomas's parents had left, this is why he went in, in the first place. But overall the mise en scene is generally sofas, television and other household items.

Sound

The film starts off with diegetic sound, as we can see what is making the sound on the screen. For example, passing by cars, Costa talking and any other type of sound similar to that. Then as Costa starts to walk into Thomas's house, as the camera follows him non-diegetic sound plays as he walks down the path. This means that we cannot see the source of sound on the screen.

21 Jump Street In Depth Analysis

21 Jump Street is a comedy crime film, so it fits in perfectly with the genre I've selected which is crime comedy.

0:00-0:21

0:48-1:26
The sound used in the in start which is by Eminem is non-diegetic sound as we cannot see the where the sound is coming from in the scene , the song is a very upbeat song which set's the mood of the film to be happy and gives us the impression it's a jolly film. The sound soon digresses into diegetic sound of busy corridors and students talking. We are then shown a wide angle medium shot so us as the audience can fully analyse this character, it soon moves on to an over the shoulder shot following Schmidt into the school.

The opening credits don't come before the film starts. It changes from the film opening to credits and flashes with police sirens, so the audience already know from this point that the film is orientated around the police force and crime. They finally show the name of the film, '21 Jump Street' in this flashing slides. I really like the way they have done this as if you were to watch the film and had never have heard of it before, the audience immediately knows that it revolves around crime and the police.

The mise en scene is like the normal school environment, lockers, groups of kids talking, school bells etc. Schmidt's clothing is a plain white t-shirt with jeans which is very bland. This could link into the fact that as his confidence is very, he doesn't want to express himself through his clothing and wear anything which is really out there. On the other hand Jenko, who is seen to be very confident (perhaps too much so) has a Sports jacket, which is often stereotyped to be worn by someone popular in American television. So the audience learns straight away that the two main characters are very different people.

The character we first see get off the school bus and walk through the school gives off the impression that he's very confident by the way he sway’s his shoulders, then as soon as the music fades away and he approaches a girl, the audience discover he's a very nervous person and we can see that by the way he's looking to the floor whilst speaking and stuttering in his speech. Schmidt (the blond character) is then approached by Jenko (the long haired character) laughing at him after being rejected. So from that small clip we can see out of the two main characters. The picture below shows this character just turn around from a girl that he likes,(the one in the pink approaching him). From his facial expressions and the fact that he is hanging his head down low, we can tell he is feeling very nervous and anxious.

The first camera shot we see is quite a high angle shot, showing all the students come off the school bus, it then moves down towards a mid shot showing one of the main characters, Schmidt. The camera then follows him into the school with what could be seen to be an establishing shot, showing the audience the entrance to the school. After Schmidt approaches another character to engage in conversation, 180 degree rule is used as well as shot reverse shot.

The Godfather Time Line - Indepth Analysi

The bullet points below are, key points when certain things come onto the screen, in the opening two minutes of The Godfather. I hope to incorporate some of these techniques into our final 2 minute opening, of our film which is a crime/drama.

- Starts with non-diegetic sound with Paramount Studios logo. As soon as we see the paramount logo we know that the film we are viewing is going to be of a high quality as Paramount is very well known for their production in the film industry.
- Large white text presenting 'The Godfather' comes on. Continuing with the non-diegetic sound. The name above 'The Godfather' Mario Puzo, we had to Google his name to find out who he was. This shows that in today's modern age, Mario Puzo is not a familiar name to people, however back in the 1970's which is when the film was produced I think he was the Steven Spielberg of his time.
- Slow eerie music links in a relates to the fact of it being a Crime/Drama. This music is very slow in entering and exiting the scene, which enhances the fact of this scene being very tense in the beginning. The sound is also non-diegetic, which means that the sound can't be seen coming from anything on the screen and the characters can't hear it.
- It then displays who created the film.
- The start of the film doesn't get going until about 30 seconds from the start, so its quite a slow paced start, which gives it enough time to build up the tension of the film.

- Very dark opening scene, a bit of a 1920's feel, with the characters Tuxedos, this goes great together to give the classic Mafia/Gangster feel.
- Short discussions in the start about previous events which have happened, which the audience is unaware of.

Genre Choice

We have selected the genre, Crime-Drama. This is mainly because we chose the same genre to do in our preliminary and therefore we'd be able to know from what points we need to improve on. This would hopefully result in a very professional outcome.

The characters which our group included in the preliminary stayed in character throughout, so if we continue with the same genre we will be able to sustain professional characters from start to finish.

Preliminary Evaluation

Preliminary Evaluation

The video quality of the video could be improved by using a higher quality camera for our final piece, also the sound quality needs to be addressed as you can hear back ground noise and echoing, next time we will use a better microphone. we will also try and upload to a different platform, which we hope will down decrease the video quality.

Lastly the match on action and 180 degree rule could be improved by being more precise and using better equipment, and by using higher precision when mapping out where to make our 180 degree points. Also the match on action positioning needs to be improved aswell.

Law Abiding Citizen - The Question Scene Analysis

To start with there was many different techniques used in this scene, the 180 degree rule is used effectively so that us as the audience knows where each character is in the specific scene, the characters follow this rule and do not try and challenge it at all. We are also shown a High view angle shot in this scene which allows us the cctv cameras which verify to us that it is prison. We can also tell this by the mise en scene which is metal bars, prison uniform and jail cells.

The man who is questioning the inmate uses a very soft quite voice and often stands up to be taller than him, these can both be put together to show him that he is bigger than him more important and also trying to intimidate him.

Match on action

Match on action is when you use film and video editing techniques where the edition cuts from one scene to another that matches the first actions shot. When the subject begins with action in the first cut then the editor carries it through to the second shot it creates a visual bridge which distracts the viewer from the fact that they cut from one shot to another and any slight continuity errors there may be between the two shots. The below clip is from 'The Punisher' a 2004 film.

To start with the first camera shot in this short clip could be a quick establishing shot and a wide shot. As the second clip comes in the camera angle is from a slightly higher viewpoint and is a close over the shoulder shot and follows the man running, this gives the effect that he is running much faster than he actually is.

For the mise en scene the location is on a long bridge, which is a good location for the actor to be running along. It also appears that he is holding a gun and running bare foot, this could mean that he is in some kind of danger and or in a rush as he has no footwear.
